NO You don't have to walk your dog !

Anxious nervous dogs

There, I have said it.

You have my permission not to walk your dog.

You read it, hear it everywhere.

"your dog needs exercise,

you need to tire him out,

It's cruel that dog doesn't get walked every day,

No wonder your dog has behaviour problems,

He will soon get used to it"

Nervous and anxious dogs may not cope with the big outdoor world.

AND

Making them face their fear daily can cause more problems.

What is needed is to help your dog build up his confidence. Little steps at a time.

Starting with in the home, then the garden. Gradually moving to outside your home, then when he is ready, small walks, building up his confidence gradually.

Your dog cannot learn when he is anxious. There are lots of enrichment groups on Facebook. to make your dogs life richer while he learns new ways to cope with his fears.

It is not only your dog that needs to learn, you do too.

It can be really upsetting as a pet parent trying to help their beloved dog and nothing seems to be working. You are trying your best, but feel out of your depth.

Please know, you are not to blame.
